Becoming a Headline: Before and After.
A personal account of the experience that reshaped my life, and the work that grew from it.
There are moments in life that divide everything into before and after. For me, that moment came when an experience I never anticipated altered the course of my life. What began as a private experience became public, forcing me into a reality where my identity, my safety, and my sense of personal autonomy no longer felt like my own.
In the aftermath, I found myself navigating something I was never prepared for. My name became part of a public conversation. Strangers debated my character, questioned my experiences, and formed opinions about my life from behind screens. Reading thousands of comments written by people who had never met me was both surreal and deeply isolating. Every article, video, and social media post became another reminder that something profoundly personal had become public property.
Perhaps the greatest loss was not my privacy alone, but the feeling that my autonomy had been stripped away. Decisions about my own story were often made by others. Narratives were created without my input. My experiences were dissected, interpreted, and consumed by people who knew only fragments of what had happened. There were times when it felt as though I was constantly being watched, analyzed, and followed, leaving me questioning where my private life ended and public scrutiny began. Living under that kind of attention changes the way you move through the world. It changes how safe you feel, how much you trust, and how freely you believe you can simply exist.
As difficult as those experiences were, they also forced me to ask bigger questions. I wanted to understand how these situations happen, why they continue, and what larger systems exist beneath the surface. That search for answers led me far beyond my own story. I immersed myself in research surrounding online communities, coercive control, manipulation, exploitation, and human trafficking. What began as a personal search for understanding evolved into a commitment to uncovering broader patterns and asking difficult questions.
Along that journey, I met with investigators, law enforcement professionals, researchers, advocates, and individuals working on the front lines of these issues. Those conversations challenged my assumptions, expanded my understanding, and reinforced the importance of evidence, accountability, and compassion. They also reminded me that behind every headline is a human being whose life cannot be reduced to a few paragraphs or a comment section.
Being a survivor is not the entirety of who I am, but it has shaped the way I see the world. It has taught me that safety is more than physical protection. Safety is having your voice heard. Safety is having your boundaries respected. Safety is maintaining the freedom to make decisions about your own life without fear, coercion, or intimidation. Personal autonomy is something many people take for granted until they experience what it feels like to have it diminished or taken away.
Today, I choose not to let my story end where it began. Instead, it has become the foundation for my work as a journalist, researcher, and advocate. I believe in asking difficult questions, seeking truth with integrity, and approaching every story with empathy. My hope is that by sharing my own journey, I can encourage meaningful conversations, support others who feel unheard, and contribute to a greater understanding of the complex issues that affect individuals and communities around the world.
This website is more than a portfolio. It is a reflection of resilience, curiosity, and the belief that even the most painful experiences can become a catalyst for purpose. While I cannot change what happened, I can choose what comes next, and I choose to use my voice in pursuit of truth, accountability, and a world where every person is treated with dignity and respect.
